Class Content/Rank Requirements
The Shorei-Ryu style as practiced at the USAMA has 5 performance categories that karate-ka's must pass in order to achieve rank. The 5 categories are Waza, Goshindo, Kata, Kumite & Conditioning and History, Traditions & Terminology.
Listed below is an outline of the system:
I. Waza (Basic Techniques):
a. 14 – Stances
b. 13 – Blocks
c. 29 – Strikes
d. 28 – Kicks
II. Goshindo (Self Defense):
a. Basic self defense techniques
b. Basic self defense combination
c. Ten basic self defense combinations
d. Collar grab variations and wrist/finger locks
e. Basic arm grabs
f. Basic ground grappling & submission holds
g. Basic throws, sweeps, and take downs
h. Basic knife, club & gun self-defense
III. Kata (Forms):
a. 15 Kamae's (Body forms)
b. Sente Exercises
c. Formal Kata's 10th kyu to Shodan:
- Taikyoku I, II, III
- Te Ashi Sho
- Wansu
- Anaku
- Naihanchi Sho
- Sanchin
- Empi Sho
- Bassi Dai
- DangEnn Sho (Dobutshu)
- Gopei Sho (Kuja ku)
- Tsue Sho no kon (armed)
- Matsu higa no kon (armed)
- Matsu higa no tonfa (armed)
IV. Kumite (Sparring) and Conditioning:
a. Ippon kumite kata #'s 1 - 15
b. Kihon kumite kata #'s 1 - 15
